ABOUT CUFIOT4AHA

CUF Internet of Things for Active and Healthy Aging

CUFIoT4AHA delivery is a project winner from the second open call that had over 30 applicants from 14 countries across the world, submitted for the European H2020 Project ACTIVAGE – multicentric large-scale pilot on smart living environments whose main goal is to build the 1st European IoT Ecosystem for AHA.

CUFIoT4AHA aims at expanding the ACTIVAGE ecosystem to a new deployment site in Lisbon (Portugal) through a collaborative approach focused on health literacy, patient empowerment and health outcomes and costs assessment.

OUR GOALS

For the delivery of high-quality home care, our pilot requires an integrated IoT platform that:

CONTINUOUSLY MONITORS THE ELDERLY AT HOME;

IDENTIFIES RELEVANT CLINICAL SITUATIONS FOR PATIENT FOLLOW-UP, TRIGGERING EMERGENCY EVENTS;

PROVIDES AN EFFICIENT COMMUNICATION BETWEEN FORMAL AND INFORMAL CAREGIVERS.

UNLOCKING THE ACTIVAGE DEPLOYMENT SITE: THE PATIENT 0 OF CUFIOT4AHA PILOT

June 17, 2020

In less than 3 months the teams of our CUFIoT4AHA consortium worked together in the final sprints of our most recent telehealth solution over Zoom, Skype, and Teams.
Currently, VOH.CoLAB, CUF, Promptly, and Ubiwhere have their teams spread around the country. What we believed it was not possible, this last weekend we made it real: start our pilot with the Patient 0. During the last days, our nurses were able to follow the first patient recovering at the comfort of his home.
Every day the patient used a mobile app to tell the nurse how he was feeling, and record his weight, blood pressure level, and temperature. The patient felt safer and the nurse used the small information sent by the patient to plan and adjust the treatment closer. It might look a small step to the tech-driven world, but it is a huge step to home care services based on telemonitoring.
Curious about the next step? It might look easy, but it is not: how to scale the service to be used by 50 patients! We promise you we will let you know what we are doing this summer!

COVID-19 WILL NOT STOP US FROM MAKING OUR NURSES AND SENIOR PATIENTS SAFE: FIRST TESTS OF CUFIOT4AHA’S SOLUTION

April 22, 2020

COVID-19 has arrived without notice, breaking the exhausted national healthcare systems all over Europe and the rest of the world. For our consortium, this pandemic impacted in different magnitudes, while our nurse team from José de Mello Saúde invested all their efforts in fighting the pandemic by being side-by-side with their patients, the other three partners focused their resources in advancing at full speed the development and testing of this digital home care service.

Our senior patients and their caregivers, even without being infected with COVID-19, still require health care. Thus, our mission got stronger, the health care systems are running at their maximum capacity, so it is our responsibility to develop technology that enhances the performance of the healthcare professionals and guarantees patients’ safety.
Today, we were able to test the platform for the first time. In the next few days, we will be testing devices that will be used by patients at their homes to monitor their health. Just by looking at a tablet, the nurse will be able to adjust treatment, change medication or anticipate a home care appointment. Now, more than ever, digital health is a solution.

FORM A SMART LIVING ENVIRONMENT: THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN INTEROPERABLE SOLUTION WITH THE ACTIVAGE IOT ECOSSYSTEM

January 31, 2020

Regardless their socio-economic condition, the elderly should feel safe at their homes using already existent and easy-to-use technology to monitor their health and wellbeing. Therefore, the second main goal of this project is to contribute to a dynamic European IoT ecosystem (AIOTI), which aims to support the convergence and interoperability of IoT standards. CUFIoT4AHA consortium has successfully adopted the AIOTES framework for our digital health service.
Do not stress with the strong words, we make it easier for you: from now on, the digital health platform that connects nurses, senior people and caregivers will be able to communicates with all sensors and devices, such as glucose meters, thermometers, scales, and other IoT devices, regardless the manufacturer.

We are now are ready for the moment we have been waiting for: TESTING THE SOLUTION!

CUFIOT4AHA’S CHRISTMAS GIFT: WE REACHED THE FIRST MILESTONE!

December 10, 2019

Since September 2019, we concluded the specification of the user and user’s environment requirements for an interoperable IoT system for aging well.
Taking into account that digitizing a health service also requires organizational change, and by employing a user-centered design methodology, we started by accompanying nurses in the home care service to better understand how the technology could enhance the conventional service. Then, we worked with patients and nurses to design an effective solution that meets the needs experienced by them and all possible use cases. We are now ready to start developing the technological solution!

MEETING WITH CUF'S HOME HEALTHCARE DELIVERY SERVICES

November 16, 2019

CUFIoTAHA and ACTIVAGE were presented to CUF's home healthcare delivery services. Nurses were given the opportunity to share with us their fears, confidences and beliefs associated to adding IoT-based technology to their practice routines. Therefore, nurses were engaged into the product development process.
Moreover, this team is helping us picking a practice use case to implement linguistic research methodology to translate medical content into valuable information, well understood by patients and their caregivers. A new digital system will be co-created to add value to patients, informal caregivers and healthcare professionals!

HOME CARE  FOR ELDERLY PEOPLE AND POST-SURGERY PATIENTS

November 4, 2019

From Lisbon uptown to the south edge of the Tejo river, a focus group from CUFIoT4AHA visited patients at home to characterize current clinical pathways and understand how IoT devices can help nurses to deliver better home care and add value to patients and caregivers.

MEETING AT THE LINGUISTICS RESEARCH CENTRE

October 31, 2019

CUFIoT4AHA's team gathered at Centro de Linguística da Universidade Nova de Lisboa (CLUNL) to start working for the literacy contents of the project.
It was a productive discussion on Terminology and Ontology contributions, generating several exciting ideas to produce better contents that can improve Health Literacy and outcomes collection.
